AUSTRALIAN TEST BATSMAN PHILLIP HUGHES HAS SADLY PASSED AWAY

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
In breaking, and unfathomably tragic, news, Cricket Australia has confirmed that Australian Test batsman Phillip Hughes has died as a result of injuries sustained during a South Australia vs New South Wales Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday. He was 25.
Hughes was accidentally struck on the head below the line of his helmet after misjudging a routine short pitched delivery from Sean Abbott. He collapsed shortly thereafter.

Hughes had been in an induced coma at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital following emergency surgery to alleviate pressure on his brain. Unfortunately, despite the rapid and elite efforts of medical personnel, Hughes passed away this afternoon.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to his friends, family, and the broader Australian cricket community in this absolutely tragic time.

RIP, Phillip Hughes.

Virat Kohli in Star-Studded Line-up of Ambassadors for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.

The International Cricket Council on Thursday announced the appointment of its ambassadors for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. India's stand-in captain Virat Kohli is among a star-studded line-up that includes Australia fast-bowler Mitchell Johnson, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, Sri Lanka's former captain Kumar Sangakkara and Australia's Shane Watson.
The ICC Ambassadors will add their support and considerable profile in the build-up to and during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, including involvement in the ICC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and event promotions.

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will start on February 14 with New Zealand taking on Sri Lanka in a day match in Christchurch, while on the same day in Melbourne, co-host Australia will go head to head with England in a day/night match. Melbourne will also host the final on March 29.
Australia fast bowler and World Cup winner, Johnson, was delighted to be part of the elite group that will be supporting the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
"As Australia and New Zealand gear up to host ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, I am extremely proud and delighted to be associated with the competition as an ambassador. I look forward to helping promote what is set to be a fascinating tournament with some outstanding teams gearing up to claim cricket's most coveted prize.
"I have been fortunate to participate in two World Cups to date and the Australia team is working hard to head into this tournament with some form and momentum. The tournament is going to really capture the imagination of the Australian and New Zealand public and there's a real buzz about it. I'm sure all lovers of the game will relish it as much as the players," said Johnson.
Virat Kohli, a star for India in their victorious 2011 Cricket World Cup campaign, said: "It is a matter of pride to be selected as the ambassador of ICC. I thank ICC for bestowing this honour upon me. As a cricketer, I wish to spread the passion of cricket to grassroot levels and I look at this as an opportunity to unify global initiatives for cricket throughout the world."
Black Caps captain McCullum, who has featured in the past three World Cups, said: "With the World Cup just months away, no doubt all countries will be actively plotting and planning their campaigns. In 1992 our sport captivated the nations of both New Zealand and Australia, and I have no doubt the 2015 edition will do just the same. May the best team win!"
Sangakkara, who featured in the 2007 and 2011 finals in the West Indies and India, said: "Like many, I can't wait for the start of the 2015 tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which I am sure will be a huge success. As an event ambassador I hope to assist the ICC in promoting the values and excitement of the World Cup, as well as supporting the ICC's significant community programmes off the field that have become an important part of this great event."
Watson, one of the world's leading all-rounders who tasted World Cup glory in 2007, commented: "I am very honoured and thrilled to be an ambassador for the ICC and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. Having played in the 2007 and 2011 World Cup campaigns, it truly is a special occasion and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a World Cup at home against the best teams in the world."
A total of 49 matches will be played across 14 venues, seven in Australia (Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney) and seven in New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Napier, Nelson and Wellington).

Hitman Rohit Sharma scores historic ODI double century

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
If ever there was a dream return from injury, Rohit Sharma lived it to the T at Eden Gardens on Tuesday - becoming the first man ever in the history of one-day internationals to hit two double centuries and going on to become the highest ODI scorer ever by forcing 264 runs down Sri Lanka's throat in the fourth ODI at Eden Gardens on Thursday.
It was surely the stuff dreams are made of, but it was not a dream. An Indian was hammering leather and the Lankans were chasing it. That was the only item on the menu for thousands in the stands at Eden - possibly the best setting and atmosphere for a world-record innings.
Rohit's 264 off 173 balls included 33 fours and 9 sixes, which calculates to 186 runs in boundaries. Incidentally, it's also a world record for most fours in a single innings.
Rohit's first double century was against Australia during the Bangalore ODI in 2013, when he hit 209 off 158 balls. But this one broke many more records. Here's the list:

- First man in the history of the game to register two ODI double hundreds
- Highest individual score (264) in an ODI
- Highest individual score by an Indian in List A cricket
- Second highest individual score ever in List A cricket
- Most fours in an ODI innings
Rohit's belligerence, which saw him go from 50 to 250 in just 94 balls, took India past 400 to register their fourth highest total in ODIs.
- India 418 for 5 vs West Indies, Indore, 2011
- India 414 for 7 vs Sri Lanka, Rajkot, 2009
- India 413 for 5 vs Bermuda, Port of Spain, 2007
- India 404 for 5 vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014
There have been just three men to reach the landmark of 200 in ODIs, and all of them belong to Indians doing it in India in the last four years starting with Sachin Tendulkar in 2010.
- Rohit Sharma, 264 vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata, 2014,
- Virender Sehwag, 219 vs West Indies, Indore, 2011
- Rohit Sharma, 209 vs Australia, Bangalore, 2013
- Sachin Tendulkar, 200 vs South Africa, Gwalior, 2010

Misbahul Haq becomes most successful skipper of Pakistan

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
ABU DHABI: Misbahul Haq became the most successful skipper of Pakistan when the Greenshirts defeated New Zealand in first test on Thursday.
Misbahul Haq had leveled the record of Imran Khan and Javed Miandad with victory over Australia in their second Test. Now with this win over New Zealand, he has 15 Test wins as the captain, surpassing both great players.
Misbah was given the charge of the Test team after the 2010 summer tour of England following the allegations of spot-fixing against then captain Salman Butt. Since then he has led Pakistan in 32 Tests. He has the credit of defeating Sri Lanka, Australia, England, and New Zealand in Test series.

Misbah open to BBL offers

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
Pakistan’s Test skipper smashed Australia’s bowling attack to all parts of the Abu Dhabi venue in his side’s second innings of the second Test nine days ago, bringing up his century from 56 balls to equal the mark set by the great Sir Vivian Richards in 1986.
Since, Misbah has made it three hundreds in as many innings in Test cricket, proving himself one of the world’s most in-form batsmen.
While Misbah told bigbash.com.au that his immediate focus was on more success in the series against New Zealand and next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup, the 40-year-old said he will consider a BBL offer if one comes his way.
A number of Pakistanis have blazed the BBL trail, including Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq for Melbourne Renegades, and Shoaib Malik with Hobart Hurricanes.
“I have not received any such offer,” Misbah told cricket.com.au prior to the first Test against New Zealand.
“It could be due to the fact that most of the times we are busy with international assignments when the Big Bash League is going on.
Misbah hasn’t played a T20 international since February 2012, however the middle-order batsman boasts an impressive record in the 20-over format with an average of 35.71 from 113 matches.
With a number of international stars already making the trip Down Under for BBL|04, League manager Anthony Everard has welcomed the prospect of Misbah joining the tournament this season.
“We would welcome any player of Misbah’s quality in BBL|04,” Everard said.
“We saw first-hand last week what a destructive batsman he can be and I’m sure that the fans in Australia would love to be supporting him on their team.
“The BBL is blessed this year with some of the most attacking batsmen from around the world participating, including Kevin Pietersen, Kieron Pollard, and Luke Wright and we’d love to see Misbah join in the fun.
“We already have Sir Viv involved in the BBL via his relationship with the Melbourne Stars, so it’d be great to have the two fastest Test century makers of all time involved in BBL|04.”

Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan in top-five of ICC ODI batsmen's rankings

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
Dubai: Two Indian batsmen are now in the top five of the ICC ODI rankings, with Virat Kohli remaining at number three and opener Shikhar Dhawan climbing up the ladder to fifth after earning four places in the latest list issued on Wednesday.
However, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is not playing in the ongoing five-ODI series against Sri Lanka due to an injury, has slipped one place to seventh position.
Dhawan has moved up owing to his superb performance in the first three matches of the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
He has been the leading run-getter of the series so far with 283 runs at an average of 94.33.
Meanwhile, the two South Africans - AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla - continue to occupy the top two positions in the batting table.
In the ODI bowlers list, India's medium pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is now sharing the sixth spot with Mohammad Hafeez of Pakistan after moving up a place.
Ravindra Jadeja, however, has dropped two places to be at number eight in the table, which is still headed by Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal.
India, which had jumped to number-one position in the ICC ODI Team Rankings after winning the second match of the series against Sri Lanka, may soon be challenged by Australia and South when the two go head to head in a five-match ODI series in Perth on Friday.
After securing an unassailable 3-0 lead, India (with 116 points) are currently ahead of second-ranked South Africa by one ratings point with Australia one more ratings point behind in third position.
With the final two ODIs to be played in Kolkata and Ranchi Thursday and Sunday respectively, the reigning world champions can finish as high as 117 ratings points (if they win the remaining two games). But they could also slip as low as 114 ratings points if Sri Lanka emerge victorious in both the matches.
If Australia win the series 3-2, then they will finish on 115 ratings points, while South Africa will drop to 114 ratings points. However, if the series result is reversed, then South Africa will end up on 116 ratings points and Australia on 113 ratings points.
In the scenario of Australia winning the series 4-1, they will rise to 117 ratings points and South Africa will slip to 112 ratings points, while the Proteas' victory by the same margin will put them on 118 ratings with the host side dropping to 111 ratings points.

ICC clears way for Mohammad Aamir’s return

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
DUBAI: A central body of the International Cricket Council (ICC) amended anti-corruption code on Monday, paving the way for Pakistani seamer Mohammad Aamir’s return to domestic cricket.
The ICC code was revised at a two-day meeting of executive board started in Dubai on Sunday.
The session, also attended by chief of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan, approved new provisions regarding the anti-corruption code, allowing all banned players to feature in domestic matches before their suspensions expire.
Although the revised code will apply to all banned players, it could specifically benefit the 22-year-old Aamir, who was exiled from cricket after a spot-fixing scandal during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010.
Hopes are high for Aamir’s return to domestic cricket six months prior to his international cricket ban ending in Nov 2015.
Aamir and pace partner Mohammad Asif, along with then Pakistan captain Salman Butt, orchestrated deliberate no-balls in return for money during the Lord’s Test against England four years ago.
PCB had requested to ICC for relaxation of certain conditions relating to Aamir’s ban. Sources said the PCB will formally request ICC to allow him to feature in domestic matches, but will let Butt and Asif’s bans stand intact.

Misbahul Haq is best, I Am Not Running After Captaincy now end captaincy issue: Shahid Afridi

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
“I have never chased captaincy. I am not at a level where I chase captaincy,” Afridi told reporters here on Friday.
Afridi criticizing the media for turning his every statement into an issue said Misbah was the right choice for captain. The T20 skipper said the ODI Word Cup was just around the corner and the team which played against Australia should be held intact. Shahid Afridi said this was not the time to experiment.
Shahid Afridi congratulated the test team on their historic win against Australia. Afridi made it clear that he had retired from test cricket and had no intention of making a comeback.

Injured JP Duminy to miss ODI series with Australia

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
Sydney: South African all-rounder JP Duminy will miss this month's five-match one-day series against Australia due to a knee injury, team officials said on Monday.
Duminy was withdrawn from the series, which begins in Perth on Friday, with patella tendinopathy in his left knee, a team spokesman said.
Farhaan Behardien, who is in Australia for the T20 series, will replace him in the squad, while Marchant de Lange has been added to bolster their pace-bowling resources.
"JP aggravated his long-standing knee injury during the current T20 series against Australia," Proteas team manager Mohammed Moosajee said.
"This is the same injury that plagued him during the tri-series in Zimbabwe and caused him to miss the Champions League T20.
"The recommendation from the medical committee is that he returns back to South Africa for a six-week period of rest and rehabilitation, particularly ahead of a busy season at home and the ICC World Cup in three months."
South Africa's ODI squad will gather in Perth later Monday, ahead of the first match at the WACA on Friday.
Duminy scored just two runs as Australia won the deciding T20 by two wickets with one ball to spare in Sydney on Sunday.
Cameron White steered the Australians home with an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls to pip the Proteas in a tense decider at Olympic Stadium.

Virat Kohli overtakes Vivian Richards to score quickest 6000 ODI runs

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
Hyderabad: Star batsman Virat Kohli on Sunday became the quickest cricketer in history to reach 6000 one-day international run mark, bettering legendary West Indian Vivian Richards' record during his 53-run knock in India's third ODI against Sri Lanka.
Playing in his 144th match and 136th innings, Kohli began the match 50 short of 6000 and reached the milestone with a single off left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva in the 39th over at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium at Uppal here.
Richards had needed 156 matches and 141 innings to reach the milestone in 1989.
The 26-year-old Indian, who was captaining the home side, was out for 53 and he has so far scored 6003 runs with the help of 20 centuries and 32 half centuries.
Kohli, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at Dambulla in August 2008, has an impressive ODI average of 51.29 before Sunday's match.
He is the eighth Indian to have scored 6000 or more runs and 47th overall.

1st Test: Pakistan dominate New Zealand on Day 1 with Shehzad ton

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.

1st Test: Pakistan dominate New Zealand on Day 1 with Shehzad ton

Abu Dhabi: Ahmed Shehzad hit a spirited unbeaten century and shared a record-breaking opening stand of 178 with Mohammad Hafeez to steer Pakistan to a commanding 269 for 1 at stumps on the first day of the first Test against New Zealand on Sunday.
Shehzad made the Black Caps pay heavily for a missed stumping on 16 before crusing to 126 off 290 balls, hitting 14 fours after captain Misbah-ul-Haq won his third successive toss and chose to bat.
Azhar Ali, who was also dropped by wicketkeeper BJ Watling on 31, was not out on 46.
Shehzad bettered Pakistan's 24-year-old record for the first wicket against New Zealand by putting on 178 before Hafeez missed out on his first hundred in over two years. Hafeez was caught and bowled by Corey Anderson for 96 off 137 balls, hitting 10 boundaries.
Former captain Ramiz Raja and Shoaib Mohammad held the previous record when they put on 172 runs against New Zealand at Karachi in 1990.
New Zealand bowlers toiled hard for the entire day on a slow wicket without much reward and on the same venue where Pakistan thrashed Australia by 356 runs only six days ago for a 2-0 victory in the series.
Offspinner Mark Craig created New Zealand's two chances but Watling fumbled on both occasions in a disappointing opening day of the three Test series for captain Brendon McCullum.
McCullum himself bowled five overs for only six runs in the last session where Pakistan scored 75 after fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult couldn't make any impact. The two spinners Ish Sodhi and Craig also proved ineffective after sharing 40 overs between them.
Shehzad raised his third Test century of 2014 in the United Arab Emirates off 221 balls by pushing James Neesham to midwicket for a single, hitting 12 fours.
Shehzad had hit hundreds in the drawn series against Sri Lanka earlier this year and also against Australia in the first test last month.
Earlier, Hafeez fulfilled Misbah's faith in him despite scoring only 48 runs in his three unimpressive innings against Australia.
Hafeez, who scored his last Test century against Sri Lanka in June 2012, grew in confidence and raised his half century off 81 balls by pulling Southee to midwicket for his fourth boundary in the second session.
Shehzad was more subdued and played out cautiously as he reached his fifty off 148 balls with five fours by guiding legspinner Sodhi for two runs to square leg.
However, Shehzad then increased the scoring rate and didn't hesitate to punish loose deliveries, hitting a further six boundaries as Pakistan made 109 in the second session.
McCullum gave lengthy spells to both his spinners, Sodhi and Craig, but it was Anderson's gentle medium fast bowling that brought the only success.
Earlier, Craig should have got the breakthrough in the first session but Watling missed Shehzad's stumping with Pakistan on 44 before reaching 85-0 at lunch.
Pakistan kept faith in the same team that thrashed Michael Clarke's men by 356 runs in the second test for its first series victory against Australia in 20 years.
New Zealand included both Sodhi and Craig with the Sheikh Zayed Stadium wicket having a history of assisting slow bowlers as the match progresses.
Pakistan has not lost a Test series to New Zealand since the Black Caps won 2-0 in 1985.

Sachin Tendulkar urges Indian players to follow his example

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
London: Sachin Tendulkar may have written off England's chances of winning next year's World Cup but that hasn't stopped the India great urging his compatriots to broaden their horizons with a spell in English county cricket.
England have never won the World Cup in nearly 40 years of trying and, having lost five out of their last six one-day international series, few expect them to end that sequence in Australia and New Zealand next year.
Tendulkar, who retired from cricket last year having become the first man to score 100 international centuries and been India's leading run-scorer during their march to the 2011 World Cup title, was among the sceptics when it came to assessing England's chances.
"I think Australia, South Africa, New Zealand are a dark horse, and India -- these four should be my semi-finalists," Tendulkar said at a press conference at London's Lord's Cricket Ground on Friday, where he was promoting his autobiography, 'Playing It My Way'.
"Do England have a chance? Not really. I don't think so. Anything is possible in this sport but going on current form I don't think England will be that competitive. I feel India can surprise a lot of people and I also believe the spinners will come into play. "
"People talk about the pitches for fast bowlers but because of the size of the grounds, I think spinners could be important."
India have long proved tough to beat in home conditions but have often struggled on their travels, particularly in recent times, and were beaten 3-1 in a five-Test series in England earlier this year.
Tendulkar said he thought increased exposure to English conditions would benefit Indian players, citing his own experience as a 19-year-old when he became Yorkshire's first overseas cricketer in 1992.
Unforgettable Yorkshire
"I grew up watching cricket being played in England and the reason I wanted to start playing cricket was because of the 1983 World Cup (that India won in England)," the 41-year-old Tendulkar said.
"My first Test 100 also took place in England at Old Trafford, which was a big moment for me.
"And in 1992, the first time I played for Yorkshire was a turning point in my career because it taught me about the conditions but it also taught me a lot as a person.
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Yorkshire -- they were all very supportive and welcoming and I can never forget that experience, the warmth I felt there.
"England will always have a special place in my heart and my mother-in-law is English, so I have to be careful what I say about England!," added Tendulkar.
After the end of India's recent tour of England, top-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara had a brief stint with Midlands county Derbyshire.
But Tendulkar said playing more in England would benefit India's bowlers too as he recalled the experience of left-arm paceman Zaheer Khan, who took 78 wickets for Worcestershire in 2006.
"I remember Zaheer Khan was having a lot of injuries and there was a period when he was away from cricket for a while," said Tendulkar.
"I told him there was no off-season for him -- when the monsoons are in India, he needed to go to England and he would be transformed as a cricketer.
"He did that, played a couple of seasons in English county cricket and I think that transformed him as a bowler."

Cricket Australia let players down during 'Monkeygate': Border

Cricket Universe | All Cricket Affairs,News and Updates.
Sydney: Former captain Allan Border said the country's cricket board, Cricket Australia (CA), abandoned its players during the infamous 'Monkeygate' incident, surrendering to the considerable might of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and choosing money over morality.
Border also said it was a reason for him to quit CA, he writes in his new book "Cricket As I See It".
"I thought we (the board) let the players down badly then. Australians have copped our brickbats over the years for being aggressive and in-your-face and playing that style of game that a lot of people didn't like," Border was quoted as saying by The Weekend Australian.
"We encouraged the players to clean the game up and report certain incidents but when they did report the alleged abuse, it turned 180 degrees. Andrew Symonds and Ricky Ponting were the ones who really copped it. Andrew was the victim of the abuse and Ricky is not the sort of bloke to run off and tittle-tattle but he figured enough was enough, and did what we had told him to do... both (were) pilloried for the stance they took."
Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was suspended for three matches after the second Test of a four-match series in Sydney in 2007-08 for allegedly racially abusing Andrew Symonds.
The Indian team threatened to boycott the tour unless the decision was overturned.
CA, wary of losing out on a significant amount of cash pie from the subcontinent, contrived with the BCCI to present an agreed set of facts at the appeal.
Harbhajan was let off and Judge John Hansen attacked Symonds for his approach to the game. CA earned around $7 million from a day-night match against India.
Border didn't divulge the boardroom conversations but writes: "The backroom deals were done, and I was out of my depth. They made the commercial decision, not the ethical/moral decision."
He says the board was told that "we'd have a massive financial hole if the Indians went home, and we couldn't afford it. As a board member, I was really disappointed but the initial agitation dies down when you start getting those commercial realities".
"What price do you put on these things? I quite like Harbhajan, I like the way he plays his cricket, but was he guilty? There wasn't definitive evidence."
Border writes the incident "hastened my departure from the board a little".
"I think the spiral downhill started for Andrew, his cricket started to fall away, he felt thoroughly let down and I suppose what price do you put on trying to do the right thing and backing your players and what would have happened?"
"At the end of the day, it still sits uncomfortably with me, but I get it - sometimes you have to take a deep breath and assess what your fall-back position is, you don't just head toward the abyss," Border said.
Recently, Sachin Tendulkar also launched an attack on the integrity of then Australian captain Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Adam Gilchrist over the affair in his newly released autobiography where he confirmed the threat to pull out, which was denied at that point of time.
Ponting has said that he stands by his stance of supporting Symonds and reporting Harbhajan - as the sides had been instructed before the series in cases of racial abuse - and that he did the right thing by the player, the game and society.
